Of How I Learned To Love Bikinis

You Are Too Young To Wear A Bikini

For quite a long time I was mad with my mother, as to me she was the reason why I never got to wear a bikini…. What happened was, I had been given by someone a used bikini when I must have been around 6 but my mum did not allow me to wear it. She thought I was too young to wear one, as she believed a bikini is a piece of clothing sexualising the wearer and this would have been a bit too early for me.

You Are Too Fat To Wear A Bikini

Ultimately she was probably right with this. (I believe I was about 7 or so). Why I still ended up a little mad with her about this, was that once I was actually old enough to wear a bikini, I now felt myself that I was unable to wear a bikini.

Now it was  society that had been successful  in letting me believe that I was not allowed to wear a bikini, as I was by far too fat. What made it worse,  the way it looked that was not going to change soon. Ultimately I had missed “my one chance” that I had. So this is how I ended up for a long time half jokingly blaming my mother for never ever going to be able to wear a bikini.

I Am Not Too “Anything”! I Will Wear A Bikini!

This all changed last year. Now the plus-size movement had come along, by now I had become a plus-size blogger and tried all sorts of “crazy things” like wearing a jumpsuit or showing bare my shoulders (#shock, #horror) Gabi Fresh had started the #fatkini movement and in a weird moment of “what the hell” I decided to order and try a bikini. And that is when everything changed.

I stumbled across a so called swim bra, which is what it says on the tin. A proper bra, holding everything in place and pushing it up made of swimwear fabric. Combine that with a nice high waist bikini bottom and you have the perfect beginners plus-size bikini. The first step to getting used to it. Bottom line: This was a lot more flattering than a lot of swimsuits or tankinis I had tried over the years I loved it as soon as I put it on.

Elomi Plus Size Bikini with High Waisted Bikini Bottom- Sold by Simply Be

Long live the #Fatkini

The underwired Elomi swimbra is really absolutely amazing and the best piece of swimwear I have ever owned. It gives amazing support, giving your bust the perfect support and the multistraps give you a bit of variability  It gives such great hold you can even take the straps off and wear it as a bandeau bikini top.

The super high waisted Mary of Sweden bikini bottom which are not only giving the whole set a nice vintage look, it is also a great way of easing your way into the world of bikinis without having to expose too much of your tummy all at once if you are not ready for that yet.

Mary Of Sweden High Waisted Bikini Brief – JD Williams

So ultimately my very first bikini was still very plain, simply being black, nothing too flashy. But you have to ease your way into it somehow. So after I had hit the local pool a few times and nobody had run away screaming due to seeing my plus size bod in a bikini I got a bit bolder and decided I wanted to go for a bit more colour. Well it ended up a lot more colour as that was the time when also my rather drastic hair change happened.

Magisculpt Tropical Print Plus Size BikiniMagisculpt Tropical Print Bikini Top – JD Williams

This lovely specimen of a #Simplybekini sports an absolutely lovely tropical print and still gives your boobs a really great amount of hold, not as much as the Elomi swim bra, but costing only £12.50 it is way cheaper than the Elomi top. At the time I bought this lovely set at Simply Be, however they do not appear to offer it anymore so,while you can still buy the top at JD Williams, the bottoms appear not to be available anymore. But you can easily mix and match. I actually myself like to wear the top combined  with a black bottom and the other way round. I am a big fan of mix & match Bikinis.

A Lot More Choice Lead To A Massive Obsession

Well anyway, this is how the obsession started. Since then and particularly now that the Summer has come and we are in the middle of the Swimwear & Bikini Season, I find myself quite obsessively browsing plus-size bikinis.Since last year the choice has grown massively.Last year it was pretty much Gabi Fresh’s original #Fatkinis at Swimsuitsforall which notoriously appeared to be sold out or Simply Be. Now it is not anymore only the usual plus-size retailers that might have 2 or 3 bikini sets if you are lucky, now a lot more regular retailers like AsosBoohoo, Missguided and Forever21 have entered the plus-size bikini scene.

Current Discount: there is currently a 30% discount on the Missguided Holiday Shop, including their plus size range, using the code SUMMER – Valid till 29th June 2015

The scene is going into the right direction I am loving my Bikinis, and nobody will tell me again I can’t wear one. I am loving the new availability of Plus-Size Bikinis, the only issue this is neither helping my issue with being really bad with choice (you won’t want to go to a restaurant with me if there is a too large menu…) nor is it helping my wallet… I guess though I can live with that.

Ultimately my message is and stays. Don’t let anyone tell you, you can’t wear a bikini because you are to fat. Go and get your Bikini!

Skinny Models For Plus-Size – Why?

I have voiced in the past numerous times that I have absolutely no idea why the Plus-Size Industry keeps using models hardly ever larger than a size 12 and if we are lucky maybe a 14 and today this been highlighted once again.

Rebel Wilson In A Stunning Sequins Dress

Asos Curve shared yesterday on their Facebook page this lovely picture of Rebel Wilson in an absolutely stunning sequins dress out of their collection that she wore yesterday for a film premiere.

How Could I Overlook this?

I absolutely love this dress and was wondering how I could have overlooked this stunner when I was on the look out for a sequins dress for the Christmas season. However, clicking through to the website I realise why.

But see yourself:

ASOS CURVE Exclusive V-Neck Dress With Sequin Skirt – £35

Nothing against the model, she is a very beautiful girl and even the poses are not even the problem. The issue here is, her figure might be very beautiful but it is just not suitable to give me or any other woman on the other side of a size 20 an idea of how this dress might look on us.

I Would Have Bought It In A Heartbeat

PicMonkey Collage

I absolutely love how the piece looks on Rebel it really hugs her “lady lumps” in all the right places. Based on her picture, I would buy it in a heartbeat.

Although now I can’t justify it any more, as I have already bought 3 sequins dresses in the meantime, and there are only so many Christmas and New Years Eve parties you can go to…

Why doesn’t the Plus-Size Industry Fix This?

Weirdly enough the plus size industry does not appear to try to fix this by using larger models but rather by padding the skinny models with fat suits, erm what?

 Two Models A Possible Solution?

What I would love to see in the plus size industry is what the lovely little independent label Silly Old Sea Dog is doing for some of it’s products, it is very simple and will not cost too much more: Simply using two models.

Silly Old Sea Dog Cartoon Dress 50s Style – £95 (Handmade)

If retailers are affraid we might not click on the item if we don’t see on a skinny woman then this might be the solution. And it gives the retailers a soft way to test the use of larger models without increasing risk or costs by too much.

Thinking about how much overhead goes into a piece of clothing simply a second model for the plus-size items, giving us ladies on both sides of the spectrum a better idea how it might look on us, is not going to add that much of a cost to it. I am sure it would be at least something that would be worth trialing for the big retailers. Why it has not been done yet I really don’t know

Challenge Your Body Shape Beliefs- The Jumpsuit

Amazing On Others – But On Me?

The jumpsuit used to be for me one of those pieces of clothing that you see and admire on other people but are convinced/sure that it just would not work for your body shape.

Where It All Changed

This all changed when this summer I ordered this lovely & light printed jumpsuit in a spur of the moment situation. To my surprise it did neither look “off” on me, nor did it highlight all the wrong areas of my body. In fact I actually loved it, despite me having to bare my arms and it was one of my favourite pieces of the summer.

If you want to find out more about this jumpsuit just take a look at this blog post about stepping outside of your comfort zone.

Bye Bye Summer – Hello Autumn Wardrobe

Unfortunately Summer has come and gone and so I was clearing out my wardrobe to switch over from summer to autumn selection. One thing was clear, I needed more pieces suiting the weather and my new style.

“Socially Acceptable Onesies”

Jumpsuits are just amazing, they are basically socially acceptable onesies, incredibly comfortable but also very stylish. Although you will have to make sure to choose the right one for you. If you are like me particularly bigger in the belly section you should definitely make sure not too choose too tight cuts. I would recommend you have a look around, order a selection trying to find out which one is for you.

In My Wardrobe

These are the lovely plus-size jumpsuits that have made it into my autumn wardrobe:

From left to right:

  1. Pink Clove Wrap Front Jumpsuit (In Sale: Was £28, Now: £18)
  2. Club L Plus Size Mesh Insert Jumpsuit (In Sale: Was £49, Now: £22)
  3. ASOS CURVE Jumpsuit With Cold Shoulder

Oh and don’t forget you can currently get an extra 10% off sale items till Thursday 30th October 8am, using the code 10MORE

One of my favourite pieces between those is definitely this beauty:

Our Trip To The Reeperbahn

I was wearing this beauty to our visit on the Reeperbahn when we on our Germany trip for the Plus Size Fashion Days. Jumpsuits are the perfect outfit for sightseeing.

Especially with a cardigan jumpsuits are giving you just the right flexibility for a sightseeing day when you might feel warm from all the walking or in public transport or slightly cold outside during one of those windy transitional autumn days.

Not to forget they are also very comfortable for a long day on your feet, perfect style for having a coffee during the day and with a little make-up update also perfect for a drink in a hip bar in the evening.

My Favourite Cardigan

This cardigan, which I wore on this day out has made it on to my top list of favourite cardigans. I do very much like the star design on it, it has a great feel and for once isn’t a grey black or white cardigan. This lovely star patten cardigan is also part of the sale and currently reduced frrom £32 to £16 in the current (up to 70%) Asos Sale. Although you will need to be quick, most sizes are already sold out

Challenge Your View Yourself

If there is one thing I have learned that is really important for us plus-size ladies over the last few months of blogging then it it is to challenge style rules, not only societal rules on what large women should or should not wear, but mostly your own view of yourself.

You might have tried a piece on ages ago and that particular one might not have sat right, or one of the numerous style experts online will once again have given great style advice on what larger ladies stay away from. Don’t let this make you miss out.

Try it on!

It is so worth it to occasionally try a piece you think you might look ridiculous in. The worst thing that can happen is that you will either send it back or in the store put it back on the hanger. Generally the rule is, if in doubt, try it on! And if there is something out there you have never tried on (like me a while ago with my very first bikini) get out there and try it on!

The best thing that can happen is that you open up a whole new world of styles looks for yourself. And on top of that it feels amazing. This can open up a whole new confidence or a completely different way you see yourself

Obligatory Touristy Pictures

And to finish the post off, here a some touristy pictures four your pleasure. Unless you would like to see the slide show… 😉

What Do You Think?

Have you been suprised by a piece of clothing before, of which you thought it would be so wrong for your body type and love now? What do you think about Jumpsuits? What is your favourite autumn wardrobe piece? I would love to hear from you.

There are some other bits and bobs you get with it but the next day delivery and the free returns is the main important factor for me.

A neat feature that I have been using a lot over the last few months. More retailers should implement programs like this, particularly if it is at such a reasonable price (I am looking at YOU Amazon!).

What Do You Think?

Which one is your favourite? I could not resist the Circular Skirt With Zip Front, the Midi Skirt In Scallop Hem LaceTruly You Bandeau Jumpsuit. Did you end up getting weak? Which one did you get?

#OOTD: 50s Inspired Plus-Size Pin-Up Style

Gosh it was not easy to decide what to wear for Plus North, I still had (and have) quite a few outfits to show off that I had not worn yet and there are just so many great pieces that just have come out for the new season. On top of all that I just had changed my hair colour, (and at that to orange!), which really changes the look of *everything* on you.

So as said above, I was really unsure what to wear and went through about a thousand different options, till I came on Asos Curve across what you see below and then what I was about to wear was immediately made clear.

1  – ASOS CURVE Pleated Skater Skirt
2 – Alice & You Bardot Body
3
– ASOS Bandana Print Headscarf Neckerchief

Current Favourite: Pleated Skirts

I am currently absolutely in love with pleated skirts and if you follow my blog you know that there is basically no skirt or dress I am wearing without a belt. However, on pleated skirts most belts appear to look a bit “off” and somehow never sit right or stay in place. So the contrast waistband on this skirt is really amazing and exactly what I was looking for.

ASOS CURVE Pleated Skater Skirt

Unexpected Favourite: Bodies

Bodies are my new love. I am currently discovering so many new things that work for me. And one  revelation for me was that I actually like the look of myself with my shirt tucked into my skater or a-line skirts and even feel comfortable in it.

However, that once again can be a bit of a pain as, depending on the shirt, you might constantly have to keep an eye on it if it is staying properly tucked in. The amazingly simple solution? Bodies!

Alice & You Bardot Body

I would have never thought I would ever be found in a body again. As a kid my mom had to force me into them, but now they are my new found love. I already own this beauty and am loving it, although unfortunately it is currently sold out. I am sure I will be collecting more bodies (of the textile variety of course) in my wardrobe over the next months.

The Cherry On Top: The Accessories

The final pieces to top the outfit off and to give it the proper 5os style were the accessories: The absolutely essential 50s worker style headscarf from Asos and a killer necklace from Missguided.

Necklace: Missguided – Cleksa Geometric Plate Necklace
Headscarf – ASOS Bandana Print Headscarf Neckerchief

So Far One Of My Favourites

So far this outfit has been one of my favourite outfits. I absolutely adore the 50s plus-size pin-up style. Not only since blogging but, well basically ever. It is a killer outfit showing off my best curves and enhancing them to a nice hourglass shape. Most importantly it is also a great homage to the 50s and the pin-ups of that time. Not to forget that this day was also one of the first times  I (more or less) successfully managed to style my hair in a way that involved back-combing.

What Do You Think?

What do you think? Have you been to Plus North? Did you have the same dilemma? What is it you like to wear to events like this? I would love to hear from you!
