Taking A Dip – Boohoo Extreme Dip Back Top

May I Introduce To You Another Impulse Buy!

I am usually not a fan of  weird hems. The hanky hem, bubble hem and drop hem are basically one of my pet hates in plus size fashion. This baby though really caught my eye and spurred another impulse buy.

Trying New Things And Loving It

In the beginning I was not 100% sure, but then I thought what the hell, I can at least try it. If I learned anything over the last year of blogging then it is to challenge what I believe looks good on my and to push my boundaries of what I feel comfortable with.

Neither Usual Fat Stereotype nor Eurovision Song Contest

In most cases drop hems are either one of those weird little weird  half circle added over the bum, or something you would expect to see at the Eurovision song contest. This top however is a drop hem game changer for me – it is bold enough to be special but I do not feel like I belong in an episode of Ru Pauls Drag Race.

The Sizing & Fit

The shirt is generously sized as it is meant to have a slight oversized fit. This does not necessarily mean that you should size down, but if you are a size 26 and have your heart set on this top, you should probably still be ok.

The front hem of the shirt comes in a bit higher than it does for the model on my 5’9(1.75m) & size 24-26 (EU 52-54). For my liking it is a little too high but it does not spoil the top for me, I’d just prefer the front to be a little longer. I guess the reason for it coming in higher is my rather largish bust with a cup size F-G.

For my height also the longest part is more than fine and if you are average height you should be perfectly fine as well. I think I had about 20 cm room before the “train” would have started scraping on the floor.

Great For Layering

I love the versatility of this shirt. With summer coming slowly to an end, the potential to layer becomes an important attribute for clothing. Another win for this top. On warmer days I have worn this top just with leggings bearing my arms. Now that it has become a little colder I like to combine it with a long sleeve top and jeans like I did for these pictures or with a set of Wingz, which are great for adding sleeves to any piece of clothing, for the last remaining warm days.

Easy To Dress It Up Or Down

This is one of these pieces of clothing that has endless combination and style possibilities. Did you notice how much the look and feel of it changes by just changing the shoes from my beloved Birkenstock Flip-Flops to my Deichmann plateau high heels. Depending on the accessories this can so easily dressed up or down.

PicMonkey Collage-2

There is one thing though I can tell you, you do stand out with this. Not necessarily in a bad way, but you just have to be ok with it to get some more looks than usual. At least this is what happened to me when I went out and wore this stunner in public.

Standing Out Is Not A Bad Thing

It is an unusual cut and when you walk the drop-hem basically turns into a flowing train, it just does stand out as a cut, plus-size or not.  This combination with the expectation that unfortunately still appears to exist that owners of fat bodies will generally be invisible or at least try to stay unnoticed unfortunately still seems to surprise some people.

However like I keep repeating myself quite a bit recently, like I said in my bikini a while back or in my rant about the oprah-magazine and their insane comment about the crop tops, even if this surprises people, it is not the end of the world, despite a few extra looks the world still continues to turn and in the worst case nothing happens except for you feeling more fabulous and having contributed to people wearing what they want having become a more normal sight in public.

A Word Of Warning

One little word of warning though… Just be careful if you by any chance end up wearing this top with stiletto high heels like I did and make sure this won’t be happening to you:

DSC04323-3

Now Reduced From £16 to £10

I think I found here a true stunner and am so happy ending up getting it despite initial doubts if I would really wear it. I love it and I do wear it a lot. The best news is that, while I got it at full price, it now ended up in Boohoo’s sale and is reduced from £16 to £10 now. I can only give you the advice to try it if you are on the fence about it… you might fall in love with it, in the worst case you can always send it back… 😉

What do you think?

What do you think about this top? Did you recently get an out of the ordinary piece of clothing? Let me know. I would love to hear what you think. Please drop me a comment below.

Awesome Geeky Shirts – Available Till Midnight

I should Not Have Checked Qwertee

Last night just after midnight I once again checked Qwertee the geeky t-shirt supplier I posted about  a while back like I sporadically do. I should really learn not to do that when I cannot really afford to buy any additional clothing.

Only Available For A Day

If you are not familiar with Qwertee, let me explain the issue quickly to you. Qwertee offers awesome and very creative geeky shirts. So far so good. The real trouble is they offer them only for one day. Every day they have a new set of shirts but they are only available for 24 hours and then pouf gone (FAQ Here).

Oh How I Wish You Could Be Mine

And today they do not only have 1 of them but 3…

Doctor Who Qwertee Shirt

For The Doctor Who Lover In Me

You Shall Not Pass Qwertee Shirt

Lessons To Be Learnt

There are also some other ones, so if you are as geeky inclined as I am and have a little more money than I have, it might be worth to give it a look. You can also check the “previous shirts” if you would like to see what else they have done as well as vote on the designs you would like to see soon. However, if you are broke as me, stay away. One thing I still have to learn.

Although while we are talking about “things to learn” it would be nice if Qwertee would offer some larger ladies style shirts, but till then the men shirts will do and have done fine. If you would like to see how they fit you can check out my OOTD featuring the Minion shirt.

What Do You Think

I would love to know what your “geeky pleasure” is. Is there a shirt that you could not resist?

O-Magazine Has Spoken: No Crop Top For You Fatty!

The Fashion Authority Has Spoken – No Crop Tops!

Warning: contains sarcasm.

Ok everyone it is time to get your fashion rule book out again. The all encompassing fashion authority has spoken again. I mean I don’t really know who that is but the Oprah magazine sure does. How otherwise could they have given such definitive and clear fashion “advice”.

I guess you are  now most likely sitting at the edge of your chair, with a sharpened pencil ready to add rule number 5,387 to your “Fashion For Fatties” rule book, right after the rule “Touching thighs are not acceptable”. So here it is:

You fatty should never, ever, ever so far as to consider wearing a crop top.

What The Magazine Really Said – But It Is Not Much Better

The Oprah Magazine (O Magazine), you remember Oprah – that woman that is usually all about empowerment, has published some fashion advice that is so negative it still baffles me hours later and that even though I have come across my fair share of outrageous fashion rules & tips in my time blogging.

The advice that is outraging the internet and me was an answer to the question “can I pull off a crop top?” Brace yourself for the actual “fashion rule” that was given as answer. “If (and only if!) you have a flat stomach feel free to try one.” Seriously? I almost fell of my chair.

Oprah, Crfop Tops Only For Flat Stomach

The message is bad enough body shaming. We do see this sort of thing every day, what is particularly baffling about this one is not only in what magazine it was found but even worse how it was written. I am still not over the text in brackets and the exclamation mark.

This Is How Much I Care

Well thank you Oprah for this well meant advice. I will consider it, keep it in mind and do with it what I do with a lot of the before mentioned 5,387 rules in the “Fashion Rules For Fatties” Rule book, happily ignore it and to celebrate the day by getting my everything but flat size 24 stomach out.

I have to admit that despite all the body confidence progress that I have made since I have started blogging, thanks to trying so many things, daring to wear crop tops was still a pretty big thing for me.

You might think now, hey she recently raved about how much she loves bikinis, you are showing loads more skin when wearing a bikini, why is should this now be a problem. Well this is the thing with confidence, it is not always logical. And not only that, when wearing a bikini you usually go swimming, not to town or in a bar, people expect to see some sort of larger degree of bare skin which makes it a bit simpler. Crop tops are still partially one of the taboos for plus size ladies.

I did even leave the house wearing a crop top

Well ultimately I did dare to go outside in this crop top. And once again not dissimilar to when I wore the bikini, the world still turned and no-one was pointing with fingers at me. I wore this outfit (with less ankle braking heels) out to a work do and ended up getting so many compliments. Initially I left the house with a simple black kimono over this, so that I did not feel quite so naked and could cover up if I felt uncomfortable, but no need for that. 20 minutes into the work party that cardigan lay somewhere in a corner and me and my non flat belly were rocking the dance floor in my crop top.

Internet Do Your Thing – #Rockthecrop

Other than that, the internet has done what it does and exploded with outrage. Lots of amazing women of varying degrees of not flat stomach have shared fabulous pictures of themselves online. It is definately worth checking out the the hashtag #rockthecrop. Here is a selection of a few, but check it out yourself. 🙂

Inexcusable Body Shaming (Or A Ploy)

So either that was now a big ploy of the O Magazine to kick us all into “Hell No”-Mode and make us all wear crop tops in defiance or they are just the idiots they appear to be and they just gave a lot of women out there another set of body issues they should not have to worry about. Go get yourself a crop top!

Battling With One Of My Plus-Size Insecurities – The VBO

Girl Geek In A Dress In Plus Size Boohoo Nadia -Shoulderfree Front Zip Dress In Blue

The Boohoo Plus Size Cooperion With Nadia Aboulhosn

I am pretty sure that most of you have heard in one way or the other about the Nadia Aboulhosn Plus Size Range Boohoo recently brought out in cooperation with the blogger.

I really do love the range. It is bold, a bit edgy but not over the top or slutty. It has just a lot of fierce pieces, that are unapologetic for being plus size. In short exactly what the plus-size fashion scene needs more of.

nadia plus size range

Nadia Crop Top With Zip

Asymmetric Crop Top and Skirt Co-ord
Off The Shoulder Asymmetric Maxi Dress
Embossed Sleeve Hoodie
Crop Top & Mini Skirt Coord
Off The Shoulder Zip Front Dress
Split Shoulder Dress
Long Sleeved Panel Dress

As much as I love the pieces though, there is one issue with them. A very large proportion of the range are very close cut to tbe body, many of the dresses are in a bodycon style. Ultimately there is nothing wrong with this, but for some of these  pieces you either have to be happy to show and own your “VBO” (Visible Belly Outline) or size up.

Big Body Confidence Steps – VBO A Step I Have Not Made Yet

For most of the range I would advise to size up, but as I am a size 24, which is as large as Boohoo’s Plus Size Range goes, my only option was to own up to my VBO. I have come far in my time blogging accepting myself and my body, owning my bare arms,  strapless jumpsuits and even my very first bikini (the full post has been lost, but I’ll rewrite it soon)

However the VBO is just one of the things that has been a bit difficult for me to own up to and I (on myself) simply do not find attractive and a good style to wear out. This is not a generic statement, expressing that no-one should. If you are happy showing the world your VBO I salute you, please please do it. I personally battle with myself if it comes to this

So despite immediately falling in love with the Nadia Off The Shoulder Zip Front Dress* below in blue (which is also available in black), I had it lying around here for quite a while till I mustered up the courage to share it with you guys.

Plus Size Nadia Off Shoulder Front Zip Dress black & blue

It looks really amazing on Nadia. On me though I was not quite sure what I thought about it. I loved it too much to send it back but was unhappy enough with it to hesitate sharing it with you or being ok wearing it outside. What do you think?

I am not too happy with the way it it at the moment and would not wear it on its own, but my issue is that I am at the very edge of their sieizes. If you are either happy with your VBO or able to size up, this dress will look absolutely stunning on you. And now the dress has even been reduced to only £12

A Sportier Look With The Nadia Embossed Hoodie

Boohoo Nadia Plus Size Range

I hoped that help for my issue with the VBO would come from another piece I really  from the Nadia Range, the Embossed Sleeve Hoodie. While it can be worn like your traditional hoodie, this one is quite a bit more stylish than the average hoodie and is perfect to give your favourite short to medium dress a more sporty look. In the campaign itself Nadia is wearing it with the Split Shoulder Dress (now reduced to £5!).

Finally Adding Some Leggings

Ultimately I also added some leggings to the outfit. The dress it great to show of a nice pair of  plus-size legs, but as short as this dress is, it will almost definitely lead to chub rub on said plus-size legs without a pair of tights. I personally am one of those people who don’t get away with wearing a dress without tights or leggings. A pair of leggings can also work with the hoodie transforming this dress made more for a night out to an even more sporty look, but see the two different looks yourself below.

Maybe I’ll soon be fitting in the dress a bit better. I am currently working on getting a bit fitter again after I have noticed that I am out of breath again a lot quicker and my blood pressure has gone a bit up. The additional exercise and looking a bit more after what I eat, has lead to some weight loss, and so maybe continuing the weight loss I might reach a fit with which I might actually be happy wearing the dress out.

What do you think?

Do you dare sporting a VBO? Do you think I should drop my insecurities and wear the dress out as it is? Do you prefer the dress with our without leggings What do you think about the Nadia range?

The Geek Side Of Me – Geeky Plus-Size Fashion #OOTD

As you all are well aware, my blog name is Girl Geek In A Dress and next to me loving fashion, being Girl Geek is a very important part of my identity. Particularly after I spent this Saturday at the Manchester Girl Geeks Mini Barcamp I realised that I have pretty much neglected this very important part of me, which is also an important part of my fashion choices next to all the dressy choices that I have been sharing with you here.

Plus Size Girl Geek Fashion - Doctor Who Minion Qwertee Selfie

The Geek in “Girl Geek In A Dress”

I decided that it was more than hight time to share with you my geekier fashion choices. I do believe this is a truly important section that I have neglected far too long, as while it is difficult to find nice plus-size fashion, it is even more difficult to find nice geeky plus-size fashion…

Plus Size Girl Geek Clothing - Doctor Who Despicable Me T-Shirt Gif

Qwertee – A New Geek Shirt Each Day

One of my favourite places to go to for particularly creative and out of the ordinary shirts is Qwertee. Qwertee in the UK and Teefury in the US are shops that offer every day 1 (sometimes 2) new geeky designs often also featuring a mash up of two different films or comics from pac man, to breaking bad, the Big Bang TheoryLord Of The Rings, etc. or simply things held dear by geeks like catscoffee or astronomy.

Qwertee Geek T-Shirts
Happy Qwertee Customers In the Various Designs

Happy Qwertee Customers In the Various Designs

Only Up To UK Women’s Size 18

While Qwertee offers women’s cut t-shirts they unfortunately only offer them up to a size WXXL which corresponds to a width of 55cm across the chest, with a circumference of 110cm the corresponds with a UK size of ca 18, far too small. It appears as if Qwertee believes there are no plus-size geeks out there… really? It is not that difficult to find a t-shirt company that offers plus-size women’s shirts to print on.

So it is clearly something they need to change and the more people tell them the more likely it is that they are going to change it. So use your social media power and tell them on Twitter or Facebook that you want plus-size womens’s Qwertees and tag or mention me (@GirlGeek85) or my post if you are super lovely :).

Still Possible To Be Worn By The Plus-Size Girl Geek

That does not mean though that you won’t be able to wear those great designs if you are a plus size. I personally am somewhere between a size 24 and 26 and buy ther XXL men’s shirts and am quite happy with them.

What is important when buying men’s shirts is to check the width stated in their sizing chart and check it against your chest measurements, as this is most likely your widest part and the part that was not planned in, in a men’s shirt. I personally would recommend though not to go too big, otherwise it could look a bit shapeless and too baggy, but that is totally up to you and how you prefer it.

Plus Size Girl Geek T-Shirt

Wearing a men’s shirt does not have to be masculine. I like to combine my geek shirts with a skirt, particularly skater skirts, as they really help to build that hourglass figure and a belt will help to really take your waist in, shaping your feminine silhouette further. Other than that I like to stay casual and practical combining the shirt and skirt with leggings and sneakers for comfort. Perfect for a long day of talks or any other tech or geek event.

I am wearing my favourite Qwertee design depicting a mash up of Doctor Who and Despicable Me, showing the Minions stealing the Tardis and the Sonic Screwdriver of the Tenth Doctor. The skirt I combined this shirt with today was the Missguided Wet Look Skater Skirt which is a great skirt to be dressed up or dressed down. It is currently reduced to £12 at Missguided and soon I will be showing you the bolder side of it in my most daring outfit yet.

What Do You Think

What do you think of my more geeky side? I can’t believe I haven’t shown you more of that sort of thing yet, as it is an important thing of my style. I guess I was so busy stepping out of my comfort zone and sharing it with you that I completely overlooked to share my comfort zone self with you.

Would you like to see more geeky plus-size fashion? Do you have a favourite geek shirt or a great place to get geeky fashion? I’d love it if you would share it with me!

Simply Be Spring/Summer 2015

A while back I was lucky enough to attend the Simply Be Spring/Summer Preview. This was an absolutely amazing event in an impressive London penthouse, involving some lovely wine, yummy canapés, a stunning new Spring & Summer collection and lots of lovely plus size blogger babes.

Simply Be SS15 UK Plus Size Blogger Event

If you follow my Instagram you will have most likely been able to follow the events on this day as it happened and will already have gotten a glimpse into the new Simply Be collection, if not, even the more of a reason to follow me on Instagram.

I so hope the bikini top will come up to a G-Cup. #SimplyBeSS15 #preview #plussizeswimwear #plussize

Simply Be’s have by now even added a video of this preview day on their youtube channel so that you can get a first hand impression of the event in moving pictures if you pay enough attention you can even glimpse of me wearing one of my favourite Missguided dresses in this video.

 My Favourite Trends & Pieces

While then these styles were merely a preview, these lovely pieces are now, bit by bit, making their way into the Simply Be online shop. A good occasion to give you  a bit of  a closer look at the collection and my favourites.

While I am not really a fan of this years florals I am very much in love with the the clean bright colours in an almost candy colour range in combination with clean strong cuts as well as the simple monochrome styles with a hint of 60s. And lastly not to forget I like the denim. For some reason it has recently not been easy to find a nice plus size denim jacket.

Great Swimwear 2015

The one thing though that absolutely stood out to me is the Swimwear. This year simply be have really outdone themselves with their swimwear. Great colour combined with vintage lines.

Colour Block Bikini
Polka Dot Bikini
Sports Swimsuit
Mesh Swimsuit

What is great about these swimsuits, at least some, is that Simply Be also thought of us busty ladies when designing them. Wearing a G-Cup I am simply not able to wear a “normal” swimsuit without proper cups and/or under-wires. My mom always called it “pancakes” what swimsuits without proper cups would do to a large bust. No desirable shape… The black mesh swimsuit is one of those good examples, as it contains fixed foam cups supporting and keeping the bust in shape.

My absolute favourite piece is the monochrome one piece below which will instantly transform you into a plus size bond girl.

simplybe_1101469599544371

Retro Swimsuit

But also the Bikinis are not to be scoffed at.  After I made a great step of confidence and bought my very first Bikini last year (read more about this here) I might be buying Bikini number 3 and 4 this year…

What Is Your Favourite?

Which one is your favourite piece? Did you get one of these lovelies already
