Buy British Day – UK Made Plus Size Clothing & Accessories

Did you know that every October  Buy British Day takes place?  A day celebrating British manufacturing and supporting local businesses. Today might not be the exact day but I still thought it would be great to join in.

So today I want to share a short selection of local plus-size clothing & accessories businesses most of which do not only offer great quality but also allow you to submit your own measurements and customise your products.

Silly Old Seadog

silly-old-sea-dog-logo

Silly Old Seadog is an amazing company. Not only is it UK based and producing unique and quirky vintage fashion, but their stunning vintage dresses are also handmade and they are one of the few places that do not distinguish between straight and plus sized.

Their inclusive range spans from size 6-24 and also offering dresses made to your custom measurements. And as the final cherry on top they use different body types of models to showcase their fashion on their site.

Feeling Like A Princess – With Florentyna Dawn

Florentyna Dawn Title Pic

Special Occassions – A Time You Should Feel Amazing

When attending a special occasion it is just so so important not only to finds a dress that looks great but to also in which one feels comfortable. Although what am I saying here, more than comfortable, one should feel a million bucks and struggle to avoid mirrors and other shiny surfaces as you love the sight of yourself so much. It is a time when you should feel amazing and it is a shame if an outfit you don’t like should be the thing ruining how you feel.

As much as this holds true as a wedding guest or similar, but especially when attending a once in a lifetime event like your prom, your daughters wedding or maybe even your own wedding it is more than only important, it is crucial.

Making Do – The Issue With Ill-Fitting & Boring Dresses

It is a real shame how much we plus-size ladies have to make do with mediocre and ill-fitting dresses on occasions like this. Might it be just because there is hardly any choice or that clothes were so hard to find our compromise arrived last minute and there is just no time to exchange it or finally the worst case when we did not find anything at all. In this case we are presented with the choice of not going or we often make do with any day dress we can find that we can somehow pass on as evening dress.

I Hated My Graduation “Dress”

I do think back to my graduation ball (Abiball). This is one of the rare occasions in German everyday life where you have an excuse to dress yourself up to the nines. While other girls usually attend the dance in lovely flowy evening gowns, I was forced to wear a more or less tight chinese print tunic over black trousers. This was the best I could find after a 6-month search. I don’t think there are even any pictures of myself in that outfit I hated it so much…

Florentyna Dawn – One Of The Rare Truly Size Inclusive Boutiques

Florentyna Dawn - Plus Size Special Occassion & Mother Of The Bride Wear

Experiences like this are what make me appreciate little gems and exceptions from the norm like Florentyna Dawn so much. Florentyna Dawn is one of the rare shops that are truly size inclusive and body-positive. Without question, they are offering all their dresses in a size 6-50+. Yes the plus means that even the 50 is not limiting. They specialise in mother of the bride dresses, but they do have something available for any special occasion you might come across. We do need more size inclusive businesses like that, that are not petite, not plus size, not tall but just well stocked and flexible!

#WhatILoveAboutYou – Plus Size Blogger Event

A while back they invited some of us ladies for an afternoon to their Hazel grove shop and they made all of us literally feel like princesses. The dresses were stunning. It was amazing to be able to take dresses as special as these of the rail and to be able to just try them on.

IMG_8593

One might expect they have the dresses in a few standard sizes and if you are above that you have to order them in, but this is not the case. While each of us came in a different size representing pretty much the whole size spectrum each and any of us were able to pick some lovely dress of the rail and try it on.

The day was absolutely amazing, not only were the dresses stunning Florentyna Dawn had even invited an amazingly talented MUA Sarah Maredith who did our hair and makeup and she really did an amazing job!

What Do You Think?

Like always I would love to hear from you, about your experience and what you think. This time I really can’t decide on one question, so here are a few things I would love to hear from you about:

  • Which of the above is your favourite dress?
  • What is your experience with evening wear?
  • Where do you buy your occassion wear?
  • What was your last special occasion and what did you wear? I would love to see your pictures!

What You Should Not Wear… – Fashion Rules

Are you as tired as me of stupid rules about what we are allowed to wear or not? We all have come across rules or even lists of what we apparently should and should not wear. These rules can present themselves in so many different ways:

  1. “Passed Down Wisdom”: that has been passed down from woman to woman like I have been told so many times, that I should not wear stripes or patterns or that I should avoid short skirts, bodycon dresses or generally tight tops.
  2. School’s Dres Codes: Weird rules imposed by schools about what girls (and also boys) are allowed to wear, most of the time claiming the girls would be too much of a distraction to the boys in their leggings or skirts revealing irresistible kneecaps. This goes to so crazy lengths that girls have been sent home from school for wearing leggings. (1, 2, 3)
  3. Social media comments: Maybe you came across the beautiful picture of “What Laura Loves”  in a stunning jumpsuit on the Simply Be Facebook Page which was taken apart by mean commenters claiming she should not wear a jumpsuit as it was unflattering
  4. The Press: one of the most recent examples was the Oprah magazine stating that you should only wear a crop top if(AND ONLY IF as they repeat) you have a flat stomach… I already had my rant about this specific article here

Oprah, Crfop Tops Only For Flat Stomach

Simply be has recently put together an eye-opening list of all the confusing rules they came across…

Completely Arbitrary Or Even Plain False

These rules are completely arbitrary and even the assumptions they are based on are sometimes even plain false.  The myth for example that horizontal stripes make you bigger has been debunked in multiple studies. A 2008 study even found that horizontal stripes make you appear 6% thinner than in vertical stripes. Who decided what is flattering?

What Is So Wrong With Clothes That Don’t Slim Us Down?

Even if horizontal stripes would make you look fatter, what is so inherently wrong with that? Why are we so obsessed with “flattering”? Are we plus-size ladies and body-positivity lovers still so deeply convinced that  being big is such an awful thing that it needs to be concealed, hidden?

If we want to move plus size fashion to the next level we have to learn to step away from our obsession with “flattering” and “slimming”. I personally believe that one thing we have to learn is, that flattering is not a synonym to slimming.

Dress Codes – Often Demeaning For Both Genders

It is obvious that for school or the workplace we should all follow some common sense dress codes. Ultimately you just should not wear you clubbing clothes to your school or workplace.

However, a dress code that go so far as to ban leggings, the visibility of bra straps (tank tops/strappy tops) or similar are demeaning for both genders. These rules assume that boys would be unable of controlling themselves in the view of some ankles or a bra strap shame the girls for completely innocent clothes choices

What Can We Do?

When thinking about what we can do about those stupid rules and misconceptions there is one simple answer.  Break the rules, break them at every occasion you get, and be visible doing it. That way we can break down the expectations of us trying to stay invisible and to hide our rolls and extra pounds at all costs. Show your glorious body in whatever you like to wear!

Simply Be Project – Break The Rules

So when Simply Be shared with me their asked me if I wanted to participate in their recent project aiming to break those rules down following  their recent blog post about those rules, I was immediately in. They were so nice to supply me with some pieces from their line to go and break some rules. A project right after my liking.

Breaking the rules!

So here is a selection of outfits breaking all the rules I could think of featuring past outfits and the lovely dresses that i was supplied by Simply Be

Cheap & Easy DIY Plus Size Costume: Ursula

Plus-Size Halloween

Halloween choices for us plus-size ladies are still a little meagre but slowly seem to be getting better. We still have to put a little more effort into finding our perfect plus size costume but at least options do exist.

There are some great bloggers who have for years already shown some amazing costumes on their blogs and also have this year put together some great resources.

One of Georgina’s awesome costumes this year was a great take on Ursula  from Disney’s Little Mermaid. The costume was available at website based in the USA, that also does some other great plus size costumes. The Ursula costume, unfortunately, has now sold out.

Halloween Is Almost Here

If you are like me, you keep putting finding your Halloween costume off and off, and before you know it is almost Halloween. By that time you are either too broke to order a great costume and/or the ones you do find are either sold out or do take too long to arrive.

So, if you are in need a last minute solution, but still would like to channel your inner Ursula , fret not, I have a great alternative for you.

Last Minute Plus Size Costume – But Not Less Awesome

This Ursula costume is super easy to make and mainly using cheap items and or items you might already own.

DIY Ursula Costume - The Little Mermaid - Plus Size Halloween Costumes

All the items can be ordered with next day delivery by following the links should you really be under time pressure.

All you need is:

  • a black peplum dress – get it here (or any other black peplum dress)
  • a belt
  • some black fabric – get it here
  • some purple fabric – get it here
  • an Albert Einstein Wig – get it  here
  • a snail shell (Aquarium decoration) – get it here
  • Pillow/Toy Stuffing
    • kitchen roll, toilet paper, cotton balls or whatever other stuffing materials you can find  her
  • a bit of string
  • optionial: some stiff but bendable wire, if you want to be super-cool.
  • optional: leggings/bolero if you like and want to save on the purple body paint

Step 1 – Mark The Shape Of Your Tentacles

Sewing the tentacles is really easy, although I would recommend using a sewing machine if you have access to one.

Pick a marker that you will be able to see on your fabric and mark on the inside of your fabric the shape of your tentacles as large triangles. I personally found it the easiest to decide how wide I wanted the tentacles to be at the top and then to start marking said width on one side of the fabric with always with 3cm space in between. Then do the same on the other side, making the first mark in the middle of the first tentacle marking of the other side and then keep going on this side (see image below).

Homemade Ursula Costume - Sewing Pattern for Tentacles

Once you are done you can simply start connecting the marks across the fabric and there you have the shape of your tentacles.

Step 2 – Sew Your Tentacles

Secure both fabrics and make sure you have the side you want to show on the outside, on the inside and sew along the markings you have just made. Once you are done just cut the tentacles apart by cutting along the 2-3 cm space you have left between them and *boom* there you have are your (limp) tentacles.

Step 3 – Filling The Tentacles

Now you only need to turn the tentacles inside out and fill them, using the toy filler you have bought or any other filling material. I actually used kitchen roll as I was a little desperate when I made it and that was all I had, but it worked fine. So you can use kitchen roll, toilet paper, cotton balls or whatever else you have around and think works best for you. Make sure you leave about 10-15 cm for fixing them on the belt.

If you want to make the supercool you can add some bendable wire along the tentacle and then you can bend them in shape when you were them, but they also look awesome without this.

Step 3 – Finishing Off The Tentacle Belt

You are almost done with the tentacles. Just take the top of the tentacle that you have left unfilled and roll/fold it over and either sew it in place or fix it with safety needles. As I had filled it with kitchen roll I wanted to keep the option open to maybe reopen them one day and fill them with the proper filling material.

Once you have created the loop, slide the belt through the loops of the tentacles then space them out and you have your tentacle belt. When you hold the belt they will all bunch together but you can space them out once you wear it.

Step 4 – Put Your Tentacles On

DIY Plus Size Ursula Costume - Tentacles

Here it becomes obvious why you need a peplum dress, next to them looking awesome at any time, the peplum bit is perfect for hiding the tentacle belt. So grab your tentacle belt and fasten it tight enough to stay in place and to keep the tentacles in place but also loose enough so that you can adjust the position of the tentacles.

Once you have made this far, the largest part is done.

Step 5 – The Snail Shell Necklace

At the time I made this costume I ordered a big snail shell from the aquarium decoration section on Amazon. This specifc large shell does unfortunately not seem to be available anymore, but there are multiple sea shell selections available and I am sure there are going to be some nice snail shells in there.

Carefully drill a hole into the shell. I did it by hand, using a drill bit. Slowly but surely I drilled through it by turning the drill bit manually. I was a bit worried, using a power drill might break the snail shell, especially as I only had the one shell available.

Ursula Snail Shell Necklace
Source

Simple Handmade Snail Shell Necklace for DIY Ursula Costume

You will need two holes – one on either side. Feed the string through the hole and knot the end of the string until it is bigger than the holes. Et voilà – you have your necklace holding Arielle’s voice!

If you happen to have the right shells and the time  you could get even another step closer to perfection and look and consider making some seashell earrings. All you need is glue, some old drop earrings, which you are happy to recycle. Select suitable shells (see image below) and just glue the seashells onto the old drop earrings or attach via a hole you drill through the shells similar to what you will have done to create the necklace. It won’t last forever but will look great for an evening.

Step 6 – Ursula Makeup

With the make-up is where the real transformation begins. The Ursula makeup is easier than one would expect. Tutorial & Products Used DIY Ursula Makeup - Disney Villain Costume - Ursula

What I used:

The most important points are, the eyebrows are very very high, so use the charcoal dazzle dust to conceal your eyebrows (if you do not want to go so far as to use the glue trick). A strong electric blue for the eyeshadow is key as much as the dramatic red lip.

Ursula Red Lipstick
Source

And most importantly don’t forget the beauty spot – and don’t mix up the sides like I did the first time! The spot is on Ursula’s right.

There are some great YouTube tutorials. Simply search for Ursula make-up and you will be spoilt for choice.

Step 6 – The Nails

The longer the nails the better. Ultimately your want to create proper witch nails, seawitch nails to be specific. Therefore I got some Long Red Nails from Amazon to simply glue on. But if you don’t want to be limited in your movements by having insanely long nails you can obviously just use some red nail polish instead.

hand

Step 6 – The Hair

The final and easiest step – take the Albert Einstein wig and comb all the hair upwards. Put the wig on, hide your own hair under it and give the wig a last comb upwards.

Hello Ursula

DIY Disney Villain Costume - Ursula Costume Tutorial

The great thing about this costume is that it can also be dressed up or down for the occassion. Wear an officewear peplum dress for day occassion or use a mini or low cut dress if you want to turn it into a sexy costume. Depending on your personal taste you can also add leggings or a cardigan and wear it wither with ballerinas or high heels. It is completely up to you.

Boohoo I Am Skint – Plus-Size Summer Essential Bargains

No Shopping Sprees For Me This Summer

This summer I am a little broke… So unfortunately there was no way I could have done any big summer clothes hauls. Over the whole summer I was watching with This summer I am a little broke… So unfortunately there was no way I could have done any big summer clothes hauls.

A Bit Jealous Of The Colourful New Wardrobes

Over the whole summer I was watching other fashion bloggerswith a slight sense of jealousy  how they were showing off their lovely summer dresses. I am particularly jealous my newest blogger crush and discovery Boardroom Blonde. Just look at how colourful and bright her wardrobe is:

Screenshot from 2015-08-31 02:31:18

Woohoo – A Mini Haul Is Possible

So I was very, very happy when I once again was online window shopping when Boohoo came to the rescue. Boohoo in general offers very, very affordable clothing that even their plus size section does really deserve the label fast fashion, unlike the plus size section of some other retailers..

Bargains In The Summer Essential Section

A lot of their Summer Essentials section is currently up to 60% reduced and there are some real bargains in there.

I bought all of the below items for only £29

collection-shadow

Plus Nicola Printed Wide Leg Trouser – £4 (was 20)
Plus Rebecca Colour Block Skater Dress – black or blue- £5 (was £18)
Plus Natalie Side Slit T Shirt Maxi Dress – black or blue – £8 (was 16)
Plus Macy Strappy Front Bodysuit – black, grey, white – £12 (full price)

There are also lot’s of other lovely pieces in the sale  that I unfortunately had to leave behind, next to some lovely full price jumpsuits. Too many to all call them out. Just check them here. One last piece of the sale I still want to mention specifically is this dip back top (black/white/grey), as will be a central piece of an upcoming OOTD that will be live very soon. I still bought this at full price during the time I was offline you are now able to get this instead for £16 for £10.

Boohoo Dip Hem Plus Size Top

Plus Lizzy Extreme Dip Back Top

Dead Excited

The clothes might not be quite as colourful as Boardroom Blondes amazing wardrobe but I am still so, so looking forward to this little parcel arriving. There is just no better feeling than a bargain ;).

Always Worth To Have A Browse

This find is also once again proof that it  at times can be worth to have a quick browse online or instore even if you expect not to find anything in your price range and boohoo is always a good place for a bargain. Debz recently also has written an interesting post about an unexpected New Look bargain on the high street…

End Of Summer Sales Everywhere

So if you are skint like me at the moment, now is the time to have a good window shop as all the other usual retailers will right now run their end of summer sales or run a sale on their new season pieces to start to push those. So wherever you go boohoo, new look, asos, missguided or any other fast fashion low(ish) price retailer you will have a good chance to make a bargain. My asos summer sale wish list in fact is endless. If there is ever time for a bargain it is now and the boohoo sale is a great place to find one.

What Do You Think?

Have you come across a great bargain? Where and what did you get? Do you have a new blogger crush that we should not miss out on? Please drop me a comment below.
